What is number plate transfer?

Number plate transfer or "cherished transfer" describes transferring a registration number from one vehicle to another.

Since the early 60's there has been a desire in the UK for different and rare numberplates which ultimately led to being allowed to complete a number plate transfer.

Now a multi million pound business in the UK; number plate transfer is a large source of revenue for the DVLA and a multitude of number plate dealers.

How to transfer a number plate?

To transfer a number plate- you will need to complete DVLA form V317 with detail for both the car currently displaying the reg (donor vehicle) and those of the car to receive the registration number (recipient vehicle)

Having completed DVLA form V317 you will need to send the following documents to your local DVLA office - NOT DVLA Swansea.

  1. Registration document V5 for donor vehicle
  2. Registration document V5 for recipient vehicle
  3. MOT certificate for donor vehicle
  4. MOT certificate for recipient vehicle
  5. Copies of tax discs for both vehicles- not the originals
  6. Transfer fee (payable to DVLA Swansea) £80

Transferring a number plate costs £80 at the time of writing. Cheques must be made payable to DVLA Swansea.
