How do I sell a number plate?

Selling a number plate has become one of life's little mysteries- it's a very simple process but as its uncommon many people are doubtful of what does and doesn't need to happen in order to sell a numberplate.

Can I sell it?

First things first- the number plate you wish to sell needs to either be currently assigned to a vehicle registered in your name or your name must appear as the Grantee or Purchaser on the V750 or V778 retention document.

Is the plate on retention or a vehicle

Depending whether the number plate is currently held on retention or assigned to a vehicle- this will affect your ability to sell it.

Retention

Selling a number plate on retention will require you to be named as the grantee or purchaser on the retention document. If you are named only as the nominee then you have no entitlement to the registration number and are unable to sell it.

Vehicle
If the numberplate is currently on a car then the car must be registered in your name as this signifies you are "entitled" to the plate. Check your V5 registration document to be sure that the car is registered to you.
