2010 in number plates

January 26th, 2010

2010 promises to be another stellar year for number plates and an interesting one as the recession subsides and activity in buying and selling number plates increases once more.

Perfect 10

The release of the “10” series of plates marks a landmark change and further possible confusion for the public on just when certain number plate combinations are released.

10 – bearing a resemblance to LO will see a raft of HE10 and similar plates capitalising on some unique combinations created by the 10 series.

DVLA Auctions

6 Auctions planned for 2010 and they look set to yet again achieve some record breaking results and add further revenue to the DVLA.

The January DVLA Auction gets underway on 27th January in Cambridgeshire with lot 1OOO set to steal the show.

Venues as far and wide as Harrogate and Warwick mean everyone has a chance to visit a DVLA auction and sample the atmosphere if they wish.

We’ll keep you posted of all the auction results and information as it happens.

Gone in 60 plates

The release of the “60” series later in the year will bring a unique combination of “GO” number plates to the fore as well as provide many a perfect 60th birthday gift.

Details are yet to be confirmed on this release but we shall update you when it is announced.

Sealed bid auctions

Although not publicised vastly the DVLA are planning to hold sealed DVLA auctions once more this year.

A great chance for some bargains and a huge money spinner for the DVLA with reduced overheads.

The sealed bid auctions in 2009 generally had more unsold lots than “live” DVLA auctions but represented a greater opportunity to snap up some bargains.

Whatever happens in number plates in 2010, Smashing Plates will be there – watch this space!

DVLA Auction - January 2010

January 14th, 2010

27TH, 28TH, 29TH January 2010 sees the first DVLA Auction for 2010. A collection 0f 1500 personal plates ranging from the unique (T3SCO) to the bizarre (KEB44B)

As usual the auction is being held in a picturesque location - the Haycock Hotel in Wansford, Peterborough - a central point for number plate buyers, lovers and collectors from up and down the UK.

So what to expect? as always there is one plate which promises to steal the show - “1 OOO” this rare and attractive dateless number plate has a reserve of just £8000 and promises to be another six figure star of the show.

A resurgance of “OOO” plates is a welcome change to this January’s DVLA plate auction as they have a distinctive look and exclusivity - other plates such as OOO848Y (£250 Reserve) and 27OO (£2900 Reserve) will also do well - not least in the latter as the plate looks like 2700 rather than twenty seven O O.

As usual we’ll be reporting on the highs and lows of the event as well as other notable sales and records broken. January’s DVLA auction looks set to match it predecessors both in sales and the quality of the plates on offer.

2009 in number plates

January 8th, 2010

Last year was not only an eventful time in the world of showbiz and politics but also in the world of number plates - here we take a brief look at 2009 in number plates..

59 number plates

Having been in place since 2001, new style number plates have advanced to 09 and 59. 59 in particular is of note as 59 bears a resemblance to ‘SP’ which led to a whole host of banned number plates such as 59ANK or 59ERM and kept the DVLA busy declining certain combinations.

10 Number plates

Advance sales of 10 number plates reaped £2M in the first day of sales - £1.2M in the first hour alone

Damian Lawson, DVLA Personalised Registrations’ Marketing Manager, said: “While we knew there was interest surrounding the new 10 series, we never expected the level of response we received on day one. We have all been left quite stunned.”

Although the plates purchased cant be used until March 2010 it shows the strong and increasing demand for personalised number plates both as an investment as well as for fun.

Auction results 2009

2009 saw not only the usual 6 DVLA auctions, but also some newer sealed bids auctions which help to further enhance the DVLAs revenues with a minimal outlay.

Plates such as 7T fetching £81k in June continue to set the pace for record auction prices – this is set to continue in 2010.

Crime doesn’t pay

Criminals are often caught using number plates - this particular article caught our eye in the SP office in 2009.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1235943/Jail-blundering-bank-robbers-used-BMW-personalised-plate-set-raid.html

Credit crunch & number plates

On the whole number plate values have sustained throughout the recession – at the higher end number plate valuations have remained strong with more people considering number plate investment a legitimate alternative to the markets.

As for 2010? a strong year beckons with more DVLA auctions and investment activity - will it be a smashing year? only time will tell.

Spelling names in new style number plates has been a tricky business since their introduction in 2001.

Because of the way the number plate is constructed – the age identifier makes some name virtually impossible to spell.

Unlike Prefix number plates which enjoyed many thousands of “perfect” combinations such as COL1N or S1MON – current style plates are a harder option.

This plate from a distance spells “CHAZ” – this only really works by literally discarding the central digits 51 and the repeated letter H.

The overall effect works but in reality current style number plates make it harder to spell names and words.

End of an era – last of the 50’s as the 59 number plates ready for launch.

May 20th, 2009

The DVLA have announced the forthcoming September release of 59 plates which will herald the end of the 50 series which began the new style number plates with 51 plates back in 2001.

This also means that next year will welcome both the 10 and 60 number plate sequences as replacement.

59 style reg plates will mean a new array of number plate combinations as Damian Lawson – marketing manager for the DVLA remarked

“Again, the introduction of the new 59 series opens up a whole new raft of potential registrations, being able to view them prior to sale provides time to have fun with our system to ensure customers get the plate of their choice”.
